Masks: The eroticism of mystery
The Eroticism of “Mystery”
(featuring Commentary and Photography by Larry “Dikk Dasterdly” Little”
A mask by definition is a covering for all or part of a face, worn as a disguise to amuse or terrify other people. I love and adore masks so much. My take on masks are similar to the definition but somewhat different. I view masks as a tool to be seen, but not seen. To the person in front of the mask lies a barrier, a mystery, a life with no real soul except for what can be seen through the eyes.
To the person behind the mask lies the thrill of limitless possibility. To be anyone you want to be. To say whatever you want to say. You dictate to the world, whatever emotions you want them to feel because they lack the ability or the tools to refute or question it.
I asked one of the most popular and searing hot creative juggernauts of photography, Larry “Dikk Dasterdly” Little out of Camden NJ, about his thoughts on utilizing masks in photo-shoots.
“ I hate plain shoots…”
” Ima cancer and have to be creative… have to be out the box “
” MASKS allow me to get creative and out the box with it and just like models get in to character when they model or perform I find mask gives them an empowerment to be whoever and whatever they want to be at that particular time and space which brings out a more raw creation from the model and all I have to do as the photographer is capture it. It’s something about the anonymity of the person in the mask that allows them to bring out a different persona then without the mask”
” I love how Erotic and Fine Art Photography can utilize masks to convey a sense of the entire aforementioned elements of what masks can do, but in a sexual context. Masks and sexuality is a fetish. Masks and sexuality by default create a core concept of eroticism and that is “mystery”. Masks and sexuality create the perfect canvas in which the viewer can project their own sexual proclivities, which makes this art form one of the most powerful Erotic Fine Art Photography expressions that can be created. “
