Erotic Photography Lesson

These are the 10 Photographers that every Erotic Photography would benefit immensely from studying.  The lessons to be learned from these 10 photographers are critical if you want to escalate your ability to create superior erotic photography portraits.

Being an artist isn’t something you do, it’s what you are. As artists, we have to continue to strive and push ourselves; not to attain any particular goal but simply to maintain a minimal level of satisfaction within ourselves about art work we create. Photography as an art form differs from almost all other art forms in that it has both a technical component and a creative component which requires mastering. Erotic photography has three different components with the third component being “emotive sexuality”.  Somewhere between these three spheres of expression where the lines cross each other, lies a small space, a small space where we as erotic photographers must create our artistry. I wrote this article as a tool for aspiring erotic photographers or even very experienced erotic photographers who are searching for some inspiration may research and find the tools necessary to take their artwork to another level.  I created this lists from my own personal opinion, and from the opinions of a few fellow photographers that I have grown to respect very much over time. Let me know what you think? Do you agree with my list or disagree with someone on this list? More importantly, if you have any images that you feel have been inspired by any of these photographers, share them with us and the world. Contact me and once I receive 10 good examples, I will publish them as a follow up to this article.

Ellen Von Unwerth

There is just something refreshing about Ellen Von Unwerth’s lack of pretentiousness that makes her artwork flourish. You will see more attention given to the composition and emotional content in images than technique, which is still stellar.

Edward Weston

In our digital age with our advanced lighting equipment and superior technology, the complexity of our art has mirrored this slice of time. Edward Weston’s style of raw, simplistic beauty and clean lines needs to be learned, so we can understand exactly where our sense of style is truly coming from.

Helmut Newton

In my opinion, next to the great Ansel Adams himself, no other photographer encapsulated the artistry of photography better than him. From technique, to lighting, to composition, Helmut Newton makes it all look so effortless.

Ken Marcus

I compared Helmut Newton above to Ansel Adams, however, this photographer literally studied under the photography genius Ansel Adams.  Ken Marcus is such thrilling enigma the way he smoothly and fluidly will shoot Fine Art Erotic nudes such as the one below of the Los Angeles Ballet.

Then Ken Marcus will shoot something laser thin ; bordering between pornography and extreme glamour photography such as this image with a man ejaculating on a woman who just finished having oral sex with him.

“This was in the days before digital. There were no shortcuts. You had to be technically right-on with what you did, or your results would fail. If you were 1/3 of an f-stop off you were screwed. You had to understand complex lighting, and all of the technical aspects involved in producing glamour layouts.”

Steven Meisel

Although Steven Meisel is probably known best for his Coffee-table book “Erotica” that he shot with Madonna . Steven Meisel was simply a brilliant artist with his fearlessness in blurring the lines between fashion editorials and fine art nude portraiture. Steven Meisel often shot with a hidden message for the viewer to decipher themselves.

“Obviously, I feel that fashion is totally racist. The one thing that taking pictures allows you to do is occasionally make a larger statement. After seeing all the shows though I feel it was totally ineffective. I was curious, because it received a lot of publicity, whether it would have any effect on New York, London, Paris, or Milan; and I found that it did not. They still only had one token black girl, maybe two. It’s the same as it always was and that’s the sad thing for me. “

Sante D’Orazio

Besides the fact that Sante D’Orazio is clearly a master of lighting as you can see with this image below of Pamela Anderson.  The lesson one can learn from this Brooklyn born master photographer is his commitment to his artistry. He will not shoot for American Vogue because of an altercation between them and himself after a fashion show.  Vogue demanded all of the film he shot and he refused because he knew they were going to pick the one image he hated. Fighting for artistic control is a lesson we all can learn about.

Radoslaw Pujan

Most of you may not know who this photographer is and that is the beauty of this article. Radoslaw Pujan tells intimate stories within his portraiture than will tease you or sometimes may even repulse you. However, you will feel something and you will know how to shoot erotic photography with depth and emotions by learning from him.

“I have moved to Krakow and that was when I have changed my way of looking on photography.  I have started using old/film techniques. Since that moment I started looking on  photography and process of making photo from very different perspective. Before it was  only taking pictures, later it has evolved to making photos.”

Petter Hegre

Many lessons to be learned from this photographer and most of them can be from behind the camera and after the shoot is done. Petter Hegre is clearly a master level photographer who shoots images that once again border between glamour and pornography and even Fine Art nude portraiture. I would easily compare Petter Hegre to a Ken Marcus in his fluid way of vacilating between such erotic extremes. For example, this lovely image below of lithe and sensual models.   However, he made this list because of what he does after he is done shooting and that is his mastery of the internet platform. While so many other photographers are drowning in an ocean of stolen and shared works, and gluttonous amounts of imagery worldwide.  Petter Hegre does a masterful job of promotion, marketing, and revenue generation by working with the internet instead of fighting against it.

Again, much like Ken Marcus, Petter Hegre will expeditiously photograph much more sexually explicit erotic photography such as this image below of Flora and Mike.

“I like to think of myself as a messenger of uncompromising Intimacy – whether it’s a girl playing on the beach, a woman inserting a tampon or a mother lifting her new born baby to her chest. I’m a hunter of sacred, personal moments. I want to display real, sensual radiation, not just create sexy images. I think this makes me different from the majority of artists out there producing millions of (usually sub-par) images every day.”

Herb Ritts

Herb Ritts is the quintessential fashion photographer. Literally when you think of Vogue or Elle, or GQ magazines, the imagery of this master photographer usually comes to mind first and foremost. It is no mistake that this image below is one of the most iconic fashion images in history. This is Herb Ritts!

“I’m glad that I didn’t go to school for photography. Other photographers I know, Helmut Newton and Bruce Weber didn’t either. Even Steven Meisel didn’t, really –he went to fashion school. For me the most important thing I learned was just honing my eye. I think I had a good eye.”

Horst P. Horst

When you have been shooting nudes, fashion, and fine art portraiture for over 60 years, everything you shoot eventually will become iconic and they did. This brilliant photographer paved the way and influenced way too many photographers to try and list.
